This distinctive example combines the timeless sculptural beauty of the original Onfale design with an additional special base that enhances its proportions, stability and overall appearance.

Featuring a beautifully rounded opaline glass shade, a cylindrical glass body and a transparent crystal-glass rim, this lamp creates a warm, atmospheric glow. Its elegant mushroom silhouette is complemented by an additional circular base, giving the piece a more substantial foundation and a distinctive designer-inspired profile.

The Onfale collection is one of Artemide’s enduring lighting classics, celebrated for its minimalist form, refined materials and exceptional Italian glassmaking tradition.

A Special Base – A Distinctive Design Detail

What makes this example particularly interesting is its additional circular base beneath the cylindrical glass body.

The broad, flat base creates a layered, architectural silhouette, visually grounding the lamp and giving it a more substantial presence. It also provides a wider supporting footprint for improved stability.

This additional base distinguishes the piece from the standard Onfale Grande form, introducing a subtle platform-like element that complements the rounded shade and cylindrical body.

The result is a beautifully balanced statement lamp that combines the iconic mushroom shape with an enhanced, sculptural profile.

Murano Glass Craftsmanship

The Onfale lamps are renowned for their opaline glass construction and soft, diffused illumination.

The glass features a layered structure, with an opaque white central layer enclosed by transparent glass. This construction allows the lamp to emit a beautifully even glow while retaining the depth and luminosity characteristic of fine glass lighting.

The lower edge of the domed shade is finished with a transparent crystal-glass rim, creating a delicate contrast with the white opaline glass. This detail reflects the traditional glassmaking techniques associated with Murano, Italy.

The lamp retains the characteristic design language of the original Onfale collection, designed by Luciano Vistosi for Artemide.

Details

* Designer: Luciano Vistosi
* Manufacturer: Artemide
* Model: Onfale Grande XL
* Design year: 1978
* Estimated production period: Around 1990
* Origin: Italy
* Material: Opaline glass with transparent crystal-glass detailing
* Colour: White / opaline with clear glass rim
* Base: Additional circular base for a distinctive profile and wider supporting footprint
* Style: Italian modernism, mid-century modern, space-age design
* Lighting: 1 × E27 screw-fitting bulb
* Bulb: Not included unless otherwise agreed

Dimensions

* Total height: 45 cm
* Shade diameter: 34 cm
* Glass body diameter: 14.5 cm
* Wider lower body diameter: 21.5 cm

Please note that the additional base is a distinctive feature of this particular example.
