This sculptural Scandinavian design combines an exceptionally distinctive silhouette with a bold colour palette and a sophisticated mix of materials, making it a standout piece for collectors of vintage furniture and iconic Nordic design.

The chair features a generously shaped, suspended bucket seat upholstered in mustard-yellow leather with contrasting cognac-brown leather panels. The warm, unusual colour combination gives this example a particularly expressive character, beautifully highlighting the chair’s organic contours and inviting, enveloping form. The natural creases and patina of the leather contribute to its authentic vintage appearance.

The deep, softly contoured seat is designed to cradle the body, while the distinctive chrome-plated tubular steel frame creates a striking contrast with the rich leather upholstery. Dark wooden elements integrated into the frame add warmth and visual balance to the polished metal construction.

The Sonic Lounge Chair exemplifies the adventurous side of 1970s Scandinavian furniture design, moving beyond traditional minimalism towards sculptural forms, innovative construction, and expressive materials. Its combination of chrome, wood, and colourful leather makes it equally at home in a mid-century modern interior, a contemporary design collection, or an eclectic living space.

With its architectural frame, relaxed proportions, and rare mustard-yellow and brown colour combination, this chair is a highly distinctive statement piece.

Details

* Designer: Odd Knutsen
* Manufacturer: Hjellegjerde Møbler
* Origin: Norway
* Period: 1970s
* Model: Sonic Lounge Chair
* Style: Scandinavian Modern, Mid-Century Modern
* Upholstery: Mustard-yellow and cognac-brown leather
* Frame: Chrome-plated tubular steel
* Additional materials: Wood
* Condition: Good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use consistent with its period

Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.
