Mid century Artemide Onfale Piccolo Mushroom Table Lamp by Luciano Vistosi, 1990s Italy

Artemide Onfale Piccolo – Luciano Vistosi – Murano Glass Table Lamp with Special Base

We are pleased to offer this iconic Artemide Onfale Piccolo table lamp, designed by Luciano Vistosi in 1978. This smaller version of the celebrated Onfale collection combines the timeless sculptural beauty of Italian lighting design with an additional circular base that enhances its proportions, stability and overall appearance.

Featuring a beautifully rounded opaline glass shade, a cylindrical glass body and a transparent crystal-glass rim, this lamp creates a warm, atmospheric glow. Its elegant mushroom silhouette is complemented by an additional circular base, giving the piece a more substantial foundation and a distinctive, architectural profile.

The Onfale collection is one of Artemide’s enduring lighting classics, admired for its minimalist form, refined materials and exceptional Italian glassmaking tradition.

A Special Base – A Distinctive Design Detail

What makes this example particularly interesting is its additional circular base beneath the cylindrical glass body.

The broad, flat base creates a layered, architectural silhouette, visually grounding the lamp and giving it a more substantial presence. It also provides a wider supporting footprint for improved stability.

This additional base distinguishes the piece from the standard Onfale Piccolo form, introducing a subtle platform-like element that complements the rounded shade and cylindrical body.

The result is a beautifully balanced designer lamp that combines the iconic mushroom shape with an enhanced sculptural profile.

Murano Glass Craftsmanship

The Onfale lamps are renowned for their opaline glass construction and soft, diffused illumination.

The glass features a layered structure, with an opaque white central layer enclosed by transparent glass. This construction allows the lamp to emit a beautifully even glow while retaining the depth and luminosity characteristic of fine glass lighting.

The lower edge of the domed shade is finished with a transparent crystal-glass rim, creating a delicate contrast with the white opaline glass. This detail reflects the traditional glassmaking techniques associated with Murano, Italy.

Designed by Luciano Vistosi for Artemide, the Onfale collection brings together traditional Venetian glassmaking and modern sculptural design.
