Murano Opaline Glass Mushroom Lamp, Italian Mid Century Design

Artemide Onfale Grande XL – Luciano Vistosi – Murano Glass Table Lamp, Italy

An iconic piece of Italian lighting design, this original Artemide Onfale Grande XL table lamp, designed by Luciano Vistosi in 1978, is a beautiful example of the sculptural mushroom-lamp aesthetic that has become a classic of modern Italian design.

Produced for Artemide and crafted from mouth-blown opaline glass in Murano, Italy, the Onfale combines a distinctive architectural silhouette with a warm, atmospheric glow. Its generous domed shade, elegant cylindrical base and transparent crystal-glass rim create a striking balance between simplicity and artisanal craftsmanship.

This is the Grande XL version, the largest model in the Onfale collection. The lamp retains its original Murano glass authenticity sticker, reading “Vetro eseguito da maestri di Murano – Made in Italy,” an attractive detail for collectors of Italian vintage lighting.

Design & Craftsmanship

The Onfale collection was introduced in 1978 and has remained one of Artemide’s enduring lighting designs.

The lamp is made from layered opaline glass, featuring a white central layer enclosed by transparent glass. This construction creates the characteristic softly diffused illumination for which the Onfale is known.

A distinctive detail is the clear crystal-glass rim around the lower edge of the domed shade. This transparent band is applied by hand, adding a refined contrast to the opaque white glass and reflecting the traditional skills of Murano glassmakers.

Designed by Luciano Vistosi (1931–2010), the Onfale reflects his background in Venetian glassmaking and his ability to combine traditional glass artistry with modern sculptural design.
