A striking pair of Mid-Century Modern cantilever armchairs designed by Gastone Rinaldi for RIMA, Italy, dating from the 1970s.

These chairs perfectly showcase Rinaldi’s distinctive approach to Italian modernist furniture, combining sculptural geometry, innovative metalwork, and exceptional comfort. The elegant chromed wire-frame construction creates a light, almost floating appearance, while the circular pedestal bases and cantilevered seat give the chairs a strong Space Age character.

The chairs feature beautifully contrasting red leather seats and backrests, set against the polished chrome structure. The open wire construction of the armrests and back creates an airy architectural silhouette, while the swivel base adds practicality and functionality.

Gastone Rinaldi was one of Italy’s important post-war furniture designers and is particularly known for his pioneering work with tubular and steel structures. Through his company RIMA (Rinaldi Metalmeccanica), he produced innovative seating designs that became representative of Italian Mid-Century and Space Age furniture.

This is a particularly attractive example, combining Italian design, chrome wire construction, vibrant red leather, and a functional swivel mechanism.

CONDITION

The chairs are in very good vintage condition.

The chromed frames retain a beautiful shine, and the swivel mechanisms function well. The red leather upholstery is well preserved, with only minor signs of age and use consistent with their vintage character.
