Mid century Piano stool attributed to Fischel & Wienerlecht, Thonet, Germany, 1960s
Thonet piano stool, made by Thonet, around 1960s.
Thonet was the son of the master tanner Franz Anton Thonet von Boppard. After completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Thonet set up as a self-employed carpenter in 1819. In the 1830s, Thonet began making furniture from glued and bent wooden slats. His first success was the Boppard plywood chair around 1836. Thonet gained considerable independence in 1837 through the acquisition of Michelsmühle, the glue factory that produced the glue for this process. However, his attempts to patent the technology failed in Germany (1840) and in Great Britain, France and Russia (1841). Thonet's essential breakthrough was his success in transforming light, strong wood into arched, graceful shapes by shaping the wood in hot steam.
This enabled him to design completely novel, elegant, lightweight, durable and comfortable furniture that resonated strongly with fashion - a complete departure from the heavy, carved designs of the past and whose aesthetic and functional appeal remains to this day.
