Arne Jacobsen
The designer and architect Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902 and worked as a bricklayer before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts. In 1925 he took part in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and then traveled to Germany. During this formative stay he was influenced by Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Before World War II, Jacobsen designed a number of private and public buildings in Denmark and thus helped to shape the term Danish Modern style. In 1943 he fled to Sweden, where he created fabrics and wallpaper. After the end of the war, he returned to Denmark and became a leading figure in Danish architecture in the following decades. Inspired by Charles Eames, he began to design furniture, such as the iconic Swan Chair and Egg Chair, for his interiors.
