Exceptional set of two “Circus” lounge chairs with matching ottoman, designed by Peter Maly for COR, Germany, in the 1990s.
This striking set is an excellent example of late-20th-century German furniture design, combining playful geometric patterning with a highly considered, sculptural construction. The Circus chairs are characterized by their distinctive curved backrests, circular upholstered seats and elegant radial swivel bases.
The most remarkable feature is the woven black-and-white checkerboard backrest. Individual textile straps are woven around the curved metal structure, creating a graphic pattern that changes subtly with the viewing angle. The result is a dynamic combination of textile, geometry and three-dimensional form.
The generously proportioned circular seats are upholstered in a deep charcoal/black fabric and contrast beautifully with the lighter frames and monochrome woven backs. The chairs sit on five-spoke swivel bases, giving them both a strong visual presence and excellent functionality.
The matching round ottoman completes the composition and can be used as a footrest, occasional stool or standalone seating element.
Peter Maly is known for his sophisticated use of circles, arcs and geometric forms, as well as his ability to combine functional furniture with expressive visual language. His long-standing collaboration with COR produced several important pieces of German modern furniture, including Zyklus, Circo and Circus. The Circus seating belongs to this particularly distinctive period of his work.

Condition
The set is in very good vintage condition. The frames have been refinished and the upholstery is clean and well preserved. The chairs retain their characteristic original design and construction, with only minor signs of age and use consistent with vintage furniture.
The combination of the sculptural silhouette, woven checkerboard pattern and swivel functionality makes this a particularly unusual and collectible example of 1990s German design.
