A rare and highly distinctive five-seat Axis 3000 beam bench, designed by the renowned Italian designer Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli, Italy, dating from the 1970s.
The Axis 3000 is an important example of Italian contract and industrial design, created as a modular seating system for waiting areas, offices and other collective spaces. Anonima Castelli identifies the Axis 3000 as a Piretti design and traces its design language back to his celebrated DSC 106 chair.
What makes this example particularly impressive is its extra-long five-seat configuration, creating a strong architectural presence while maintaining the elegant, lightweight appearance typical of Piretti’s work.
The design combines a sturdy white-painted metal beam/base with polished chrome/aluminium side supports, supporting five individually shaped seats and backs. The original grey woven upholstery has a subtle retro texture with delicate blue accents, giving the piece a beautiful authentic 1970s character.
The combination of the long horizontal beam, sculptural seat shells and exposed metal construction gives the bench a distinctly Space Age / Italian Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. It works exceptionally well not only as original contract seating but also as a statement piece in a contemporary interior, large entrance hall, gallery, office, showroom or sophisticated residential space.
